day comes fight the urge to grab the closest store cleaner!  Instead, follow these steps to avoid magnifying any harm:

  • Immediately BLOT the area with a white cotton towel…DO NOT SCRUB
  • Check the towel to make sure you are absorbing the spill and that there is no dye transfer from the rug to the towel. If you spot any color transfer do not add any other liquid to the spot, simply pack the spot with corn starch to absorb the remaining moisture.
  • If there is no color dye transfer, use a sponge to wet the area with club soda and continue to blot with a white towel until you suspect the spill has been removed.
  • Next, pack the area with corn starch to absorb the remaining moisture.
  • Once the absorption is complete, try to prop the rug up so that you can allow the air to dry the entire wet area thoroughly, you can also use a hair dryer to aid the process. It is important that the area dries completely or you could face mildew or dry rot in the future.
  • Once the rug is completely dry, remove the remaining corn starch and vacuum the rug.
  • For pet stains, substitute vinegar for the club soda and follow the above.

Dust and dirt particles become embedded in the fibers, which will cause the fibers to break down over time. A wool rug can hold four times its weight in dirt, that’s pounds of dirt! Vacuuming your rug once a week will help, but a professional cleaning every year or two will remove all the debris your vacuum cannot reach, restores the original colors of the rug, and re-hydrates the wool. Please keep in mind that hand-made rugs should never be washed in your home and should never be steam cleaned. You should always have your rug cleaned in a facility where it can be appropriately dusted, washed and dried.
